A wine and food match made in heaven

Wine expert Olly Smith brings his enthusiasm and expertise for wine to the Parade Ring Restaurant at Royal Ascot (Tuesday 18th – Saturday 22nd June), to complement the modern British flavours developed by Ascot’s award-winning chefs.  

Having identified ‘Champagne Bollinger R.D. 1975’ from a ‘sip and a swirl’ and his exhaustive knowledge of everything that is James Bond as well as working with world famous Michelin starred chefs, such as Marco Pierre White, the racecourse is delighted to welcome the accomplished connoisseur to Royal Ascot.


Olly has worked closely with Ascot’s Executive Chef, Steve Golding, and sourced the perfect wine accompaniments for the sophisticated dishes within the Parade Ring Restaurant at Royal Ascot. These wines include Pouilly Fuissé Domanie Trouillet served with a starter of wild sea trout, quail egg, capers, tempura and preserved Meyer lemon vinaigrette, Meursault Michelot to accompany the main course of fillet of halibut, Beaufort cheese and lemon thyme crust asparagus, summer pea and mint tortellini and the Royal Tokaji Co Tokajii Aszu Gold Label 6 Puttonyos to match the coconut meringue, passion fruit and coconut sorbet with coconut crumble.  Olly has also chosen a range of fabulous British beers from local brewery Windsor & Eton.  The restaurant is Ascot’s most exclusive, situated at the centre of the Grandstand; it offers outstanding views over the Parade Ring and Winners’ Enclosure, as well as boasting trackside viewing adjacent to the Royal Box.


Olly is a regular on our television screens and is well known for his appearances on BBC One’s Saturday Kitchen, where he travels the country to match wines to the dishes produced. He presents his own series ‘The Secret Supper Club’ for Channel 4 and ‘Uncorking The South’ and most recently has appeared as a guest of the Hairy Bikers in their latest BBC Two series.  Olly writes a weekly wine column in Mail on Sunday’s Event Magazine and is author of two successful books, ‘Eat and Drink’ and ‘Wine: Both Barrels’.



Due to Olly’s wealth of knowledge, excellent palate and irrepressible character, he has been described by Charlie Cottrell as a ‘master of the food and drink universe’. Olly lays claim that wine is all about enjoyment and that there is a wine out there to suit every palate and every pocket.
