Strong line up for Wentworth

With the European Tour having expanded to new international horizons, the schedule is such that the BMW PGA Championship now signals the arrival every year of championship golf in mainland Britain, and with it comes that buzz of anticipation and excitement. Ah yes, Wentworth in the spring is indeed a splendid place to be. A total of 14 major champions, plus world number one Luke Donald and third-ranked Lee Westwood, are in the field for the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on May 24-27 – one of only two European Tour events on English soil all year.

Defending champion Donald and last year’s runner-up Westwood – it needed a play-off to decide the outcome – will be joined by Northern Irish trio Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell, Scot Paul Lawrie, Ireland’s Padraig Harrington, Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal, German Martin Kaymer, South Africans Ernie Els, Retief Goosen and Charl Schwartzel, New Zealander Michael Campbell, Canadian Mike Weir and Americans Shaun Micheel and Rich Beem.

For Weir, Micheel and Beem it will be a debut in the Tour’s flagship event, although 2003 USPGA winner Micheel played in the World Match Play Championship three years later, beating Tiger Woods before suffering a record 10&8 defeat to Paul Casey in the final.
