The Big Hitters are back

The confirmation that two of golf’s global superstars, Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose, will return to the BMW PGA Championship in May, is celebrated today in a new high-impact campaign which will bring their faces to the attention of millions of London residents and commuters.

Over the next few weeks, defending champion McIlroy, the World Number One and one of the most recognisable figures in sport, and Rose, ranked Number Eight, will become instantly familiar to the 3,500,000 people living, working or visiting the capital at strategic outdoor sites in Greater London.

To coincide with the announcement that Northern Irishman McIlroy and England’s Rose will compete in this year’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club in Surrey from May 21-24, the images of the gifted golfers will be prominent on some of the most highly visible sites in London.

The two players, who are the first confirmed stars to line-up in a world-class field for the 2015 event, can be seen around Greater London as part of the on-going agreement between the European Tour and outdoor advertising company, Clear Channel UK, which is an Official Media Partner of the Tour’s flagship event.

McIlroy and Rose, both Major Champions and Ryder Cup colleagues, will be prominent on 96-sheet sites on the Cromwell Road in London, close to Earl’s Court Road junction, as well as the imposing Chiswick Towers on the M4 arterial route in and out of the capital. There will also be digital 6-sheets known as ‘Adshel Live’ on around 100 bus stop panels around the city.

The initial phase of activity with Clear Channel will be for two weeks with the next phase of the long-term campaign due to be launched around the time of the Masters Tournament at Augusta National in early April to coincide with a second tranche of world renown players confirming their attendance at one of the top sporting and social sporting events of the year.

Clear Channel has a national network of 60,000 high-impact advertising sites nationwide, including on the key arterial routes in and around the capital, and will deliver visibility and brand awareness of the BMW PGA Championship 2015 on an unprecedented scale.

Over an intensive three-month campaign promoting the BMW PGA Championship, Clear Channel’s sites will have the potential to reach more than three million people living, working or visiting London at strategic, high target locations such as the M4, M3, A3 and M40.

Using some of the most iconic sites in UK outdoor advertising, including the M4 Tower, in addition to Clear Channel’s unique ‘Adshel Live’ digital network in central London, the superstars of the game competing in the BMW PGA Championship will be extremely visible to a massive audience in the build-up to the 2015 event.

McIlroy, a four-time Major Champion at the age of 25, overcame a seven shot deficit to emerge victorious over the iconic West Course last year – a success which kick-started a dazzling season for the current Open and US PGA Champion.

Rose has come agonisingly close to lifting the trophy at a venue he used to visit with his family as a starry-eyed youngster and he reached the pinnacle in 2013 when he captured the US Open title for the first time. Both players are excited to be part of the initial 2015 launch in London, just a short distance from Wentworth Club.

McIlroy, whose fame now transcends the game he plays with such brilliance, commented:  “Growing up in Belfast, the BMW PGA Championship always featured high on my list of priorities along with the Major Championships. To return to Wentworth as defending champion is a huge honour and I can’t wait to draw on the memories of 2014.”

Rose added: “Our family lived close to Wentworth and I was always excited each May to attend the event with my dad.  The BMW PGA Championship is rightly regarded as the flagship event of the European Tour and it is a privilege to join forces with Rory to bring the event to the attention of the millions of people who daily live and work in Greater London and the visitors who come to such a vibrant city.”

“I’ve travelled to and from Heathrow many times over the years and it will be interesting when I return to England to see my image ‘up in lights’ on some of London’s most visible poster sites.”
