Wentworth: ‘PGA Championship is massive for me’ says Justin Rose

Justin Rose believes this week’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth is one of the most important events in world golf as well as holding many great memories for him when he was growing up. The Englishman says that, outside of the majors, the tournament is up there with the best the game has to offer.

In 10 previous visits to the prestigious championship, Rose has twice finished second, including a play-off defeat to Denmark’s Anders Hansen in 2007.

The 33-year-old, who next month defends his US Open title at Pinehurst in North Carolina, says the West Course at Wentworth also holds many fond memories for him as a young amateur growing up in southern England,

And Rose told Sky Sports News: “Wentworth is a massive tournament for me. You’ve got the Majors and maybe a world event or two but for me it’s right there with the best tournaments in the world.

“It was the one I used to go and watch since I was eight years old with a backpack full of sandwiches and follow all the pros and be inspired by them to practice harder.”

At the weekend he returned to the course in Hampshire where he learnt the game as a youngster, to open the new Justin Rose Room at North Hants Golf Club.

Rose said that North Hants has played a vital role in his development as a young aspiring tour professional.

He added: “The great thing about North Hants is not just coming back as a US Open champion but I also came back here after missing 21 successive cuts in 1998 and 1999, and I still had their support and encouragement and that’s what it means to me.
