Wentworth receives boost from tennis and health club

Wentworth, the exclusive Surrey golf club owned by restaurateur Richard Caring, saw turnover rise 13pc last year as it attracted more members to its tennis and health club. Pre-tax losses at the club, which is home to the annual BMW PGA Championship, also narrowed as it continued to reap the benefits of a £6.5m makeover of its famous West Course.

Turnover at Wentworth grew from £16.8m to £19m in the 12 months to March 31, before the UK was hit by the wettest summer weather in a century.

Julian Small, chief executive, said the weather during the 2011-12 financial year was quite dry, which was “helpful” in encouraging more casual golfers out on to its courses.

He admitted the months since March 31 had been “slightly tougher”, due to the torrential downpours.

However, he said Wentworth, which counts Andy Murray among its members, had also seen strong demand for its spa, and tennis and health club. “We have more members here now who don’t play golf than do,” he said. “It is far more than a golf club.”

The leisure boss said the pre-tax losses dated back to an adjustment relating to membership subscriptions when the West Course was closed in 2009-2010 for the £6.5m overhaul.

The revamp was carried out with South African golfer Ernie Els but originally attracted some negative publicity after the changes were criticised by golfers such as Lee Westwood.

At an operating level profits increased to £2.5m from £674,000 a year earlier.

In 2005, Wentworth was bought by Richard Caring, the entrepreneur behind some of London’s most famous restaurants including The Ivy. No money was taken out in the form of a dividend.
