Christmas movies

Our top ten Christmas movies to cosy up for this December

Christmas is a wonderful time of year, full of decadence, cheer, celebrations and spending time with our loved ones. We all celebrate in slightly different ways, some of us have fiercely packed social schedules, trying to fit cocktails and canapes in with visiting older family members; others have busy lives tending to children while maintaining an appropriate (and never sarcastic) level of Christmas cheer!

But one thing we all have in common is a list of our favourite Christmas movies. And in a year where there has been a FIFA World Cup in December, in the desert (we won’t talk about the results) we thought that we’d take an opportunity to run through a list of our favourite Christmas movies, just in case you weren’t in the festive mood yet!

And if you’re looking to move, grab a cuppa and take some time to browse our properties for sale in Virginia Water and the surrounding areas. If you have any questions, you can also visit our award-winning website or call us on 01344 843000 and email us.

Our top ten must-see Christmas movies

(note: these are in no particular order as we couldn’t all agree on the best one!)

Home Alone

Once you are passed wondering what Mr McCallister does for a living to be able to treat 15 people to a European holiday over Christmas, this 90s rollercoaster is fun from the first minute. Watching eight-year-old Macaulay Culkin battle it out with the hapless duo Harry and Marv, the John Williams soundtrack is enough to make the Christmas hairs on your neck stand on end.

The Muppet Christmas Carol

This retelling of the famous Charles Dickens story features all our childhood favourite Muppets. Set in Victorian London this movie is chock-ful of fantastic feel-good songs, smart adult humour in places and, Michael Caine singing with a hand puppet, what’s not to love.

White Christmas

Danny Kaye, Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney star in the ultimate Christmas Classic set during the Second World War. Two war veterans take their Christmas show to Vermont in order to save their former commanding officers country in business. With musical numbers you’re sure to recognise, you’ll be tapping your toes within the first 20 minutes.

Love Actually

This feel-good Christmas themed rom-com has a stellar cast including Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson and the late Alan Rickman. Filmed in the familiar surroundings of London in the early noughties, this movie shows the interconnecting love stories of a number of different people.

The Holiday

A charming and delightful homage to love, and also to the romantic movies of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Two women, one (Cameron Diaz) from America and one (Kate Winslet) from Britain, swap homes at Christmastime after bad breakups with their boyfriends. Each woman finds romance with a local man (Jude Law, Jack Black) but realizes that the imminent return home may end the relationship.

Die Hard

The old debate burns on… In our opinion, Die Hard is most definitely a Christmas film. Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman go head-to-head at Nagatomi Tower during a Christmas party. Responsible for some first-class action sequences and cheesey one-liners, few festive movies can deliver such an adrenaline shot.

Elf

The adopted Human son of one of Santa’s elves goes on a quest to find his real father. Will Ferrell stars opposite James Caan and Zooey Deschanel in a warming tale about love, family and Christmas spirit.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

from the weird and wonderful brain of Dr. Seuss this movie, directed by Ron Howard and starring Jim Carrey comes together to twist the original story into a full-length film. Carrey is hypnotic and maniacal as the Grinch, who hates Christmas while his neighbours in Whoville celebrate noisily.

A Christmas Carol

Preferred by some over the Muppets version. A breathtaking tale by Charles Dickens, about how an annoying and cruel Scrooge (Ebenezer Scrooge) changes his opinion about Christmas. A story that will touch your soul. A great story for those who do not know the importance of a festival and how it can change a person’s life.

Last Christmas

A relatively new film featuring everyone’s favourite tyrannical queen (Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones), Emilia Clarke; this movie is set to a soundtrack by the late George Michael. This fun romantic comedy is engaging and heart-warming with some unexpected twists throughout.

So, there you have it. Ten great movies to get you in the mood for the festive period. You better get started soon if you want to get through them in time for the big day!
